“方便” has multiple meanings and is a very commonly used word. It can act as both a verb and an adjective. How to use it properly?
方便 fāng biàn
Used as an adjective
1. convenient/at one’s convenience
这座城市的交通很方便。 The traffic in this city is very convenient.
在你方便的时候给我打个电话。Give me a call at your convenience.
2. appropriate/fit
这儿说话不方便。 This isn’t the appropriate place to talk about it.
Used as a verb
1. make things convenient
方便乘客/群众 make things convenient for passengers/the general public
2. have money to spare (euphemistic use)
你方便借我100元吗?/你方便的话，借我100元。 Can you spare me 100 yuan?
3. go to the toilet (euphemistic use）
请等一会儿，他方便去了。 Please wait a moment; he has just gone to excuse himself.
