All about “总算”

All about “总算”总算 is very commonly used adverb in Chinese. It has different meanings in different occasions. 

1. at last; finally （indicates that a certain wish is finally realized）

我们总算在一起了。
We are finally together

2. on the whole（all things considered）

For a child’s handwriting, it’s quite good on the whole.
小孩子的字能写成这样，总算不错了。

3. luckily (gratified to have been favored by luck or gratified to have been spared from some misfortune)

We have lost everything, but thank God, our lives have been spared.
我们已经失去了一切，不过谢天谢地，总算是保住了性命。
